This website is a project by the students of the ILO ("Integrated Language Option") in Michigan State University. During the semester, we have worked together to better our proficiency with Spanish. We are all on different levels of fluency, but all of us have helped each other and worked together. For this semester, we have had the goal to create a project to teach something from a Spanish-speaking culture to the other students of MSU and the ILOs.

The project that we created is about the "Family Life in Latin America". This is a difficult idea to explain simply. There are many different cultures in the different Spanish speaking countries, and even among those in Latin America. They all have their own history, traditions, and culture. We began with an article. According got the research done, the people in the that particular Caribbean country had very high levels of couples living together without marriage, and lower levels of marriage. We wanted to learn more about this; why were these numbers so different from the United States? What caused this?
We researched many different things. The numbers could not tell the entire story; we also used news articles, and data from different countries. We also had the wonderful opportunity to talk to people who had lived in those countries, and were able to explain a bit to us about their first hand experiences. During these last few months, we have learned a lot about the culture in Latin America, and the different ways to define "a family".
