En Latinoamérica, como en el resto del mundo, hay una multitud de tipos de familia. Aquí hablamos de algunos términos básicos que son usados para referir a diferentes tipos de familias.

Familia nuclear—Una familia con un padre y una madre casados y uno o más niños.
Familia extendido/Familia extensa—Una familia en que abuelos, padres, niños, nietos, tíos, primos, y otros parientes, que todos descienden de los mismos ancestores, viven juntos en el mismo hogar.
Familia compuesto—Una familia en que los padres son recasados y traen sus anteriores niños al matrimonio.
Unión libre—Una unión romántica entre personas sin conotaciones religiosas ni legales.
Convivencia—Viviendo juntos sin ser casados.
Nuclear family—A family with a father and a mother who are married and one or more children.
Extended family—A family in which grandparents, parents, children, grandchildren, aunts and uncles, cousins, and other relatives, who all descend from the same ancestors, live together in the same home.
Compound family—A family in which parents are remarried and bring their previous children to the marriage.
Civil Union—A romantic relationship between people without religious or legal connotations.
Cohabitation—Living together unmarried.
